1) Spending Too Much Time on Machines

When I first started going to the gym, the thought of lifting weights didn’t seem as appealing as all these fancy looking machines, so I hopped on all of them, working out one muscle at a time, thinking I was going to get really ripped. This didn’t happen because these exercises should only be performed to assist you AFTER you have done compound exercises such as squats, dead lifts and bench pressing.

2) Doing Exercise Away From The Gym

This is quite a common one. You see, many people want to get bigger so they are more physically imposing in their sport, whether that is soccer, football, rugby, baseball or another sport. If you are already hitting the gym 3 times a week and you are also training for your sport team, you are really going to slow muscle growth down as you are doing too much.

3) Having No Protein Shakes

Having a whey protein shake after a workout is so important, and is the most important meal of the day for bodybuilders. Your body is in dire need of protein here and if you aren’t getting your stack in, then muscle growth is going to be a lot slower than it could be.

4) Not Getting Enough Sleep

Newbies to the gym often think that more is better, and rest isn’t that important. Well rest is actually the most important thing, because this is when you’re muscles grow. Getting 7-9 hours’ sleep a night will keep you in optimum health and give your body time to recover after a workout and build muscle.

5) Not Getting Enough Protein

Due to the fact that protein is the only thing that can build muscle, you really need to consume it, and lots of it. Another newbie mistake is thinking that lifting weight will get them big. No, what you eat will get you big and protein is what gets you big. Aim for at least one gram of protein per pound of body mass.
